Jobs

BERI is looking to hire hourly part-time employees and contractors in the following categories to assist x-risk motivated researchers, and help with BERI’s internal operations.

It sometimes takes as much as several months between when a potential contractor first applies and when BERI has a project to trial them on. If you’re interested in working with us, please leave your info, and we’ll contact you when a new project of that type becomes available. (When you submit the application form, you’ll get an automatic response from Google confirming that we have received your submission.)

For each work category listed below, we include the total work currently available. We generally prefer to contract with a single person who would like to take on all of that workload, but are willing to contract with more than one person, each of whom takes some of the surplus. In some cases, our current need for contract work of this type will be filled. In that case, please feel free to apply. We will contact you if and when we again have a need in that domain.

Open Opportunities:
Event Coordination
ML Engineering
Latex Typesetting
Writing / Editing

Currently Filled Roles:
Illustration
Python Development
Operations Management

A typical workflow for any of these positions below would look like:

  • a researcher shares you on a document or project and emails you with a request;
  • you might have a short phone call with the researcher to clarify the request;
  • you fulfill that request, and notify the researcher when you’re done;
  • once the researcher confirms, you log your hours on BERI’s timesheets, and get paid at the end of the month.

Open Opportunities

Event Coordination (local to SF Bay, $40/hr)

Please read the description for this position here.

Total hours currently needed: ~ 100-200 hours over the next six months, consolidated in the weeks when events will be run.

Machine Learning Engineering (partially remote, $90/hr)

Please read the description for this position here.

Total hours currently needed: ~ 360-720 hours in total over the next six months.

LaTeX Typesetting (remote, $25/hr)

If you’re familiar with LaTeX, you know that installing and resolving package conflicts can take time. That’s time a researcher could be spending on more research, and you can help them out remotely by resolving their paper formatting issues. This also shortens the researcher’s turnaround time between projects, which hastens the rate at which they gain experience.

Total hours currently needed: 20 hours, sporadically, over the next six months.

Writing / Editing (remote, $25/hr)

Soliciting critical feedback on expository writing is crucial to reaching a wide audience. If you have experience as a writer—particularly if you’ve received a lot of feedback on your writing, from friends, supervisors, or co-workers—then you may be able to provide valuable input on writing produced by BERI and affiliated researchers.

Total hours currently needed: ~ 50 hours, sporadically, over the next six months, but starting several months from now.

Currently Filled Roles

Illustration (remote, paid per illustration)

Imagine an x-risk motivated researcher who is preparing a presentation. She has a clear vision of the use case for her work, but insufficient illustration skills to represent that vision without looking tacky and unprofessional, so she doesn’t include one. If an illustrator were available to help, her vision would be better conveyed, and she’d experience more social support in conveying it. If you’re a processional illustrator, you can help provide that support.

Total hours currently needed: 0-20 sporadic hours over the next six months, depending on the availability of our current contractor.

Python Development (remote, $40/hr)

Sometimes research efforts become bottlenecked on technical issues that could be outsourced to a developer, e.g., resolving conflicts between packages. As well, codebases that are useful for safety research can benefit from review by a third party for clarity and better documentation: when it’s well-reviewed, safety researchers are less shy about sharing their code, and other researchers are more likely to develop it further. If you know python, you can help with these efforts.

Total hours currently needed: none.
