Hours: 10-30 hours/week, depending on availability
Time period: 5 months with the possibility of extension
Compensation: $30-40 per hour, depending on experience

Reports to: Elizabeth Cooper (but you will mainly communicate with Martin Fukui, Assistant Director at CHAI)

BERI is seeking a part-time, temporary operations assistant as part of our collaboration with the Center for Human-Compatible Artificial Intelligence (CHAI).

Purpose

The purpose of this position is to ensure smooth functioning of CHAI’s operations by assisting Martin and the rest of the team with a variety of tasks, described below under Responsibilities. Some of this work can be done remotely, but some work must be done on campus, primarily at Berkeley Way West.

Qualifications

  • Effective, professional communicator in spoken and written English
  • Flexible generalist, comfortable switching between very different tasks
  • Comfortable with spreadsheet filters and basic functions
  • Organized and responsible; comfortable completing recurring tasks in a prompt manner
  • Able to stay motivated while working with remote teams
  • Comfortable receiving and incorporating feedback
  • Required availability:
    • Routinely available for food pickup on Wednesdays 11:30am to 12:30pm
    • Available for ~8 hours/day from June 13-17, 2024 for the CHAI Workshop (transport and accommodation will be provided)
  • Occasionally available for other pick-up and collection activities in the Berkeley area

Responsibilities

  • Communication
    • Write up and publicize CHAI news items
    • Collate and disseminate information via email, Slack message, phone call, and video chat
    • Collaboratively write and edit documents relating to CHAI procedures
  • Website
    • Update information with WordPress (adding new students, publications, news, etc.)
  • Other
    • Use Google Sheets to organize and manage information on team members and external contacts
    • Create simple graphics
    • Order and pick up food, office supplies, etc. for the CHAI team
    • Assist with onboarding process for new researchers, interns, visiting scholars, etc.
  • Workshop planning
    • Learn our workshop event software (Whoova) and fix problems as they arise
    • Follow up with attendees and answer their questions
    • Maintain spreadsheets of attendees’ emails and other personal information
    • Be the main point of contact for speakers
